Please come back often, as we are always buying more goodies to list on ebay. This listing is for a lovely, vintage, men’s Art Deco, 10K gold filled, Elgin 554 watch. The serial number on this watch is H278163. This serial dates the watch to 1950. The watch has 15 jewels. I’ve included detailed pictures of the movement to better answer any questions. This watch is in nice looking vintage condition, with obvious signs of wear and age. The dial has developed a patina, especially around the outer edges, where the patina has a rainbow effect. I’ve never seen this on a watch before and it’s just gorgeous. I personally think this is super cool looking and makes the watch interesting, but I understand it may not be to everyone’s liking. The second hand on the lower dial is missing and will need replacement. You have to be careful of the watch crystal as it pops out rathe easily and needs resecuring. As far as its condition, though, it’s a really nice-looking crystal. There are a few little minor scuffs, but the crystal is still very clear and doesn’t need replacing. The watch case is 10K Rolled Gold Plate with a stainless steel back. Rolled gold is very similar to gold filled and wears similarly. The case shows some wear along the corners and edges of the lugs where a little bit of base metal shows through. There are some scuffs and abrasions on the case, consistent with its age, but I don’t see base metal anywhere along the bezel, just the lugs. The stainless steel case back is a snap back closure. The inside of the case back reads “Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co.” written in a circle. At the center of the circle it reads “Wadsworth Stainless Steel.” The case serial # is 6731. The watch currently has a one-piece-expandable band that is 10K gold filled on top and stainless steel on the underside. Functionally the band is in decent condition in that it stretches and snaps back to form, but the band has some appearance issues. One of the gold filled caps is missing at the back of the band. The gold outer shell shows a lot of wear on the band with base metal showing through. The band probably just needs replacing and the old band can be scrapped for the remainder of its gold content. The watch is not running at this time and will require repair in order to be a usable and reliable time piece, but it’s a beauty and a worthy watch to invest in. Will make a fabulous addition to one’s vintage watch collection and a wonderful heirloom to pass along over the years. Pictures are to be considered as part of the description.
