Swift and Brandon Barringer Executors Published by Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, USA, 1941. First editions. Complete 3 volume set of books detailing the books and manuscripts of A. E. Newton being auctioned at the Parke-Bernet Gallery in NY following Newton’s death the year previously. Approximately 682 pages in total. Bound in the original hardcover boards. Pages with pencil notations (realised prices, I’m assuming). Jackets well worn, with chipping and loss, age toning, lacking the front flap to the first volume. Good/Poor to Fair overall. Heavy at over 3kg packed. Alfred Edward Newton (1864–1940) was an American industrialist better known as an author and avid book collector. He is best known for his book Amenities of Book Collecting (1918) which sold over 25,000 copies.[1] At the time of his death, it was estimated that he had approximately 10,000 books in his collection, focusing on English and American literary works, the major part of which were auctioned by Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York in April, May, and October 1941. Highlights of the sale included the autograph manuscripts of Thomas Hardy’s novel Far From the Madding Crowd and Charles Lamb’s essay Dream Children. However, the fall in rare book prices steadily through the Great Depression meant that many sold lots brought only a fraction of prices they would have realized at the time of the Jerome Kern sale in 1929. Near Fine (NF): May show a small flaw, such as shelf wear, but nearly perfect and unread. Very Good (VG): The broadest category for used books, this describes any average used book. May have small flaws, and has probably been read, but should appear overall clean and attractive. Good (G): Will probably have significant wear or damage, although is still intact. Suitable for reading, but not necessarily a good gift copy. The old saying in bookselling is “good ain’t good.” Fair: Another term for Poor or Reading Copy: Heavily worn or damaged, a poor book will be readable but not attractive.
