Back in Stock 12-18 8″ Cast Iron combination Straight Edge/Prism/Precision Level/Parallel. No one else offers this robust and versatile design.These castings weigh about 5 pounds 12 ounces as cast machined to about 4 pounds 5 ounces pounds depending on the user’s preference. As cast, the faces are nearly flat and usually will clean up with less than 1/8″ milled off. Pictured is a raw casting and a casting I machined for precision vial and a low-precision cross vial. This is an ideal tool for use in reconditioning cross-slide dovetails, tailstock dovetails and the like. It is also an excellent first scraping project in itself. This tool was designed to accommodate a 20-arc second precise machinist level vial mounted in a brass case made in the US by Geier and Bluhm. Their part number is 4-303. Check their website for current pricing.. (Mounting the vial naturally requires some machining of the casting.) The upper face is about 1″ wide and the lower face is about 1 7/8″ wide. The top rail is about 1 3/16 inches wide. There is a finger recess provided to avoid scraping into a blind corner—this makes for easy scraping of the top face. The angle between faces is about 45 degrees. I have included photos of the raw casting and of the casting machined. I do machine this casting on request. The cost of machining depends on the features requested. These casting are properly thermally stress relieved. Here’s a quote I received today 9-9-20 from a California recipient of one of these castings: “Thanks for the reminder. I wish there was six stars :)Good job. Now I just have to find time to machine it then scrape it. This is such a good solution for killing two birds with one stone. Useful tool that doesn’t break the bank and the perfect scraping project. I’m glad I bumbled onto your eBay store.” Dimensions: 8″ L 2″ H 1 7/8″ W This 8″ straight edge has a proven popular with machinists interested in leveling and reconditioning machine tool ways. (I have been selling these essentially by word of mouth til now to amateur and professional scrapers) uniquely designed lightweight rigid grey cast iron metrology tool. I designed this straight edge and I personally cast each and every one in my own foundry using commercially sourced grey 40 cast iron feedstock. Each casting is carefully inspected and hardness tested on calibrated industrial equipment to insure an excellent and uniform void-free scraping surface. Every casting is properly thermally stress relieved prior to shipment. The quality of these castings is second to none. I guarantee it. I usually ship within 1 working day of sale completion. This casting is securely boxed and shipped USPS Priority in the continental US, Alaska, HI, and Puerto Rico. Shipping takes between 1 and 3 days via USPS Priority within those areas. UPS is a little slower. Casting are supplied either as raw castings or machined. Raw castings have had gates and risers cut off and parting lines coarsely smoothed and any flash knocked off but are otherwise as the come from the mold. Photos show a typical Featherweight casting of the type listed. Local pickup is ideal, but if castings have to be shipped they are securely boxed in a fitted wood box. I have straight edges currently in stock ready to ship. If you have any questions please contact me for clarification. These casting are not machined nor are they precision scraped. You can buy one and have it machined and then scrape it. I do provide a very economical machining (but not scraping service) if so desired. I Usually ship within one day of completion of sale.
