I uploaded higher resolution images to a gallery here: https://postimg.cc/gallery/M8j3gGf This is a really cool old concert-size (13-1/8″ lower bout) guitar from the 1890s. These Imperial guitars are supposedly the first guitars marketed specifically for the use of steel strings. That isn’t to say people weren’t using steel strings on guitars made prior to these. The guitar originally would have had a unique patented metal tailpiece and bridge combo, unfortunately, I didn’t receive that with the guitar. Those bridges aren’t really very good though as they don’t allow for any height adjustment to change the action height over time and they weren’t intonated well for steel strings. This particular guitar is larger than most of the Imperial guitars I’ve seen over the years. The Imperial brand was owned by the John Church Co. and these guitars were produced between 1880 – 1900. I think this example is from the 1890s based on the bridge that would have been on it, which in pictures I’ve seen often has a patent number of 1891 on it, so one could infer from that these bridges were likely used from 1891 at the earliest. The finish has been sun-bleached, but the woods are in pretty good shape. The top has no cracks miraculously but does have holes in it in the bridge location from where the original bridge was mounted, the back has one crack extending from a hole someone drilled, likely to mount the guitar on a wall, possibly where the guitar was exposed to so much sun. There is also one crack on one of the guitar sides. Other than that, the back braces all need to be re-glued, and the back itself is half off as-is, so will need to be re-glued as well, that is a good thing though as attending to the braces is always best with the back removed. The tuners look to be in good shape, just dirty, they will need cleaning and lubrication, but should function well afterward, these tuners are likely worth a decent chunk of change alone. The tuner buttons have a distinct grain to them, likely made of bone or ivory, and the tuner plates are brass, really nice tuners. The guitar is made of all solid wood, spruce for the top, and mahogany of some type for the back and sides. The back is made of a single piece of wood rather than book-matched with a seam down the center. The neck is one-piece mahogany (a nice step up from many old parlor guitars with poplar and basswood necks). The headstock overlay and fretboard are Brazilian rosewood and the heelcap is ebony. The guitar has a 25″ scale length. The scale and concert-sized body make this more similar to something like an Oscar Schmidt Stella concert guitar than a typical standard-sized guitar of the era, which we now commonly refer to as a “parlor guitar”.
